Homework 131, Liao

Your answers must be in your own words.

1. a. Why, according to Liao, do parents have good reasons to pharmacologically induce love for their children if they don't feel love naturally? (1pts)
b. Liao doesn't address this in this paper, but when do you think he would say one should take pills to induce love for your child? Should one take them them pre-emptively, before you know whether or not you naturally love your child? Should one take them the first moment they don't feel love for their child? Should a parent who doesn't immediately love their child wait for a while before taking pills? Something else? Explain and support your answer. (2pts)

2. Liao argues that pharmacologically induced parental love would be authentic. To argue this, he claims that we can induce authentic parental love in other (non-pharmacological) ways, and that if we can induce authentic love in these ways, then pharmacologically induced love is authentic as well.
a. Briefly describe some non-pharmacological ways of inducing parental love. (1pt)
b. Liao's argument relies on similarities between inducing love in these non-pharmacological ways and inducing love pharmacologically. Imagine someone who thought that pharmacologically induced love was not authentic, but that one can induce authentic love in these non-pharmacological ways. They would have to say that there is a dissimilarity between inducing love pharmacologically and non-pharmacologically. What is the best argument they could give? (2pts)

3. a. Imagine that you found out that your parents had to take pills in order to love you. How would this make you feel? Could you imagine preferring that they hadn't taken the pills? Why or why not? (2pts)
b. Overall, do you agree with Liao that parents should take pills to induce love for their children? Why or why not? (2pts)
